curacorn®

What is Curacorn®?

Curacorn® is an innovative treatment approach allowing us to provide long term pain reduction and relief for those with longstanding, or recurring pressure lesions, like corns or callus. Curacorn® is perfect for those patients who have tried traditional treatment options and want a longer term solution, or for busy patients who can’t commit to regular treatments for their painful lesions.

Curacorn® uses high viscosity sterile Hyaluronic Acid gel to create a “cushion” beneath your skin, decreasing the production of corns and callus and reducing the associated pain.

For patients with a thinning of the natural fatty padding of their feet, such as under the ball of the foot, Curacorn® can be used to restore that cushioning; increasing shock absorption and reducing pressure on the joints. In these cases, Curacorn® can provide both significant pain relief and increased mobility, but also lessen the risk of ulceration.

For safety, Curacorn® (and any injection of dermal fillers into the foot) must be carried out by a HCPC registered Podiatrist with a POMS-A annotation. This means that you can be assured that the person carrying out your procedure is a regulated foot expert, who is legally able to administer prescription only medications, such as Local Anaesthetic.

Are you ready for a new approach to your corns?

Types of Curacorn® Procedure

Curacorn® can be used to treat areas of high pressure on the foot; often those high pressure points have associated lesions such as callus or corns present. Usually, Curacorn® treatments will fall into three different types of procedure addressing either corns on or between the toes , corns on the sole of the foot or areas of high pressure caused by thinning of the natural fatty tissues of the foot.

digital corn curacorn

Digital Corn

Digital corns frequently present between the toes, but can also be present over the joints of the toes where there is pressure from shoes (for example, on the outside of a little toe, or on the knuckle of a hammer toe).

plantar lesion or corn curacorn

Plantar Corn

Corns can be present anywhere on the sole of the foot, but usually present over areas of high pressure or over joints. Painful plantar corns are most commonly seen on the ball of the foot and are rarely seen in the arch or on the heel.

Fat Pad Atrophy

It is normal to see the volume of fat beneath our feet decrease as we age due to a lifetime of use! For some people, however, their foot shape or medical conditions can accelerate this loss and leave very little natural padding over their joints.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is naturally found in many of the tissues of our bodies, including within the layers of our skin and in the cartilage between our joints.

Within our bodies Hyaluronic Acid is involved in tissue protection, resistance and repair.

You may have heard of it being used in many cosmetic applications, such as an ingredient in skin and hair care products. However, did you know it also has many medical applications?

It is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, to decrease pain and stiffness in specific joints, and is also approved for use in various conditions and surgical interventions in opthalmology.

For Curacorn, we use a specially formulated, cross linked Hyaluronic Acid gel that is able to withstand high levels of pressure, so that it can cope with the pressure you put on your feet while walking, or running.

What should I expect during my procedure?

Your procedure will be carried out under local anesthetic and will usually take under an hour. We’re keen for you to be as comfortable as possible during your procedure, so your Podiatrist will take you through the procedure and answer any questions you might have before beginning.

We’ll go through some final checks and consent forms with you to make sure that your procedure is the right choice for you.

Your Podiatrist will answer any questions that you have and make sure you’re nice and comfortable.

We’ll clean your toe/foot thoroughly and then administer a local anesthetic.

While we wait for the area to go numb, we’ll make sure we have everything set up and get ready to start your procedure.

Once your anaesthetic takes effect, we’ll make sure that the area is completely numb.

We’ll then use a needle and a longer, blunt, cannula to deposit Hyaluronic Acid gel under the lesion directly, or across multiple sites for larger areas. Usually, we’ll be able to do this from a single insertion point.

We’ll apply a dressing to reduce pressure over the area. For procedures underneath the foot, these dressings may be bulky, so you will need to wear roomy shoes.

You should avoid putting your weight on the area for the remainder of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. As a private clinic, we can assess and carry out your procedure without the need for a referral.

You will need to be seen for an initial consultation by our Podiatrist, however, to ensure that this treatment option is suitable for you and to discuss any alternative treatment options you might want to consider. At this appointment, we’ll also be able to remove any overlying callus and the existing corn to ensure that your treatment is as effective as possible.

The time the procedure will take will depend on the area and the type of anaesthetic being administered. Once numb, the procedure is quick but it can take time for the anaesthesia to take effect.

We would advise against driving until your local anaesthetic has worn off and full feeling returns. Driving while anaesthetised may invalidate your insurance.

For the first 24 hours after your procedure, you will need to limit the amount of pressure on the area. For procedures for digital corns, you should avoid tight fitting shoes. For procedures to address plantar corns or fat pad atrophy, it is likely that you will have significant padding to offload pressure on the area, which will dictate the shoes that you will be able to wear on the day. Your Podiatrist will discuss this with you at your consultation.

Yes, please discuss this with your Podiatrist.

You can use Clearpay’s “Pay in 3” plan in clinic and we can arrange other payment plans, as required.

As the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, it is pain free.

The injection of local anaesthetic can be uncomfortable as it may sting, but this is over very quickly (in seconds usually).

Most patients remain numb for a few hours after their procedure and find that once feeling returns, discomfort is minimal.

This will depend on you, your activity level at work and the footwear you may need to wear.
We wouldn’t advise you to return to work on the day of your procedure, as you should avoid putting pressure on the area for the remainder of the day. Putting pressure on the area, for example by walking on it, may reduce the efficacy of the procedure.

Most people are suitable for Curacorn, however not everyone will be. If you are considering Curacorn, your Podiatrist will take a thorough medical history, perform some tests and discuss your condition to  determine whether it is a suitable option for you.

Your package includes up to 3 Curacorn treatments, at 4 week intervals.

For some, a single treatment is sufficient, whereas for others the volume to be administered is split across a number of treatments. This will depend on the position of the lesion, quality of the skin and a number of other factors.
